Some news tidbits via Milla Jovovich’s verified Twitter account at @MillaJovovich, compiled from some of Milla’s recently tweeted responses to fan questions. Beginning with…

… Resident Evil 5, Milla’s husband Paul W.S. Anderson is apparently working on a script for the film right now. This doesn’t mean the film will happen, of course, but it does mean that it is a very real possibility.

Elle has alerted us to this interesting Russian-language report which claims Milla Jovovich is still onboard The Winter Queen, the Russian-language period drama/thriller which has been running into scheduling conflicts since 2007, culminating in director Paul Verhoeven ultimately leaving the project. 9 rota-director Fyodor Bondarchuk has since taken over helming the film, however Milla’s continued involvement in the production has despite online reports remained unconfirmed.

According to the rough Google translation of this Russian article from Spletnik.ru, however, Milla has once again agreed to do the film, with Bondarchuk as the new director. According to the article, first post-Verhoeven negotiations took place already last year, but it wasn’t until recently that Milla consented to starring in the film in its new production form. Although according to The Winter Queen’s Internet Movie Database-page filming is expected to begin this summer, it is likely that the Spletnik.ru article is closer to the truth in saying that filming is currently slated for the fall, with Milla’s summer filming schedule looking very busy with Bringing Up Bobby and The Three Musketeers.

Until Milla confirms (or denies) her involvement in the film via an official outlet, we’ll continue to treat her role in The Winter Queen as “rumored”, however we of course remain hopeful that these rumors prove to be true. It’s sounded like a thrilling project from the beginning!

As some of you will know, as far back as in 2007, Milla Jovovich was set to portray Amalia Bezhetskaya in The Winter Queen (aka. Azazel), the 19th century Russian crime drama based on the novel by Boris Akunin. Since its announcement, the production of the film has suffered multiple delays, however, and in mid-2009 it seemed unlikely that either Milla or then-slated director Paul Verhoeven were moving ahead with the project.

Today, however, Screen Daily reports The Winter Queen is back in the works with a new director, Fyodor Bondarchuk, and with Star Trek-actor Anton Yelchin signed on. The article further implies that Milla Jovovich is still set to star in the film, while at the same time making no mention of the film’s other previously signed actor, Dan Stevens. It seems like forever ago (last November to be exact) since we last heard any news on the Paul Verhoeven directed and Milla Jovovich starring project The Winter Queen. The film, based on Boris Akunin’s novel, is set in 1876 and tells the story of a young investigator with the Moscow police who, in the midst of solving a suicide of a university student, instead finds himself in the middle of an international conspiracy.

The project seemed to be going along at a good pace when production was stalled due to Jovovich’s pregnancy. In a later interview, the actress revealed that Verhoeven was moving onto other projects which left The Winter Queen dead in the water before production even started. That however, seems to have changed.

News now is that the project is going full speed ahead with shooting scheduled to start in April. But who has taken over for Verhoeven? Why, none other than Fyodor Bondarchuk, the man behind Inhabited Island, a film we’ve talked about in the past.

It’s good to see the project moving ahead and it’ll be interesting to see how Bondarchuk’s previous work (he certainly has his own style) translates into this story. I expect we’re in for a treat

As part of the promotional effort for David Twohy’s Hawaiian honeymoon thriller, A Perfect Getaway, Milla Jovovich recently sat down with the guys at horror movie site ShockTillYouDrop.com to discuss the film as well as other upcoming projects of hers, one of which is the long awaited and heavily delayed Paul Verhoeven-film, The Winter Queen.

As some of you will know, The Winter Queen has been in the works since 2006-2007, but filming has been delayed numerous times, first by Milla’s 2007 pregnancy and then by the respective other projects of Milla and director Verhoeven. Now, it would seem the film will not be happening, at least not in any near future. From the ShockTillYouDrop.com interview:

Shock: Also, were you going to work with Paul Verhoeven at one point?
Jovovich: No, not at this point. We were trying to get a script called The Winter Queen off the ground for the last few years which didn’t really happen, so I think Paul’s going to move on and do something else.

What a shame. We were really looking forward to what sounded like an intriguing and exciting new dramatic turn in film by Milla. Hopefully, should their respective schedules permit it, Milla and Verhoeven will consider pursuing the film some other time. However, for the time being it would seem Milla will not be going forward with this endeavor and thus the project has been removed from the list of upcoming movies until further notice.
