We viewers can't tell exactly what is so frightening in the below clip, the latest in our week of Halloween exclusives, from "The Fourth Kind," directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. Maybe Milla Jovovich can't either, but she at least knows it's "not an owl." Whatever it is, it scared the crap out of her. That scream is impressive.

It was 32 years ago that director Steven Spielberg introduced viewers to the "third kind" of extraterrestrial encounter -- contact -- in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." The title "The Fourth Kind" refers to the next stage in encountering aliens: abductions. The movie, based on fact, looks at a small Alaska town where a string of alien-related disappearances occurred.

The abduction movie The Fourth Kind has been steadily gaining some hype, and after a few trailers and TV spots hit the net, we get a clip from the actual movie. In the above video, Milla Jovovich’s character sits on her bed as she listens to a woman recount her alien abduction, with sharply cut flashbacks showing the tale as the abductee catatonically tells her story. That’s pretty much what The Fourth Kind seems to offer: stories from people in Alaska that have been abducted by aliens in the night. But considering that it’s based on a true story, we can honestly say that it has the potential to pull off the effort quite nicely. The flick hits theaters November 6th.

Throughout history Earthlings have had a fascination with aliens and abductions of the fourth kind. The latest alien abduction themed movie, Universal Pictures' The Fourth Kind with Milla Jovovich, about alleged real life alien abductions in Nome, Alaska, has given new life to extraterrestrial concepts on the big screen in the same way as Communion, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Fire in the Sky. Although the most common form of reported alien encounter has long been the UFO sighting, there have also been many reports of extraterrestrial encounters with aliens who allegedly abduct humans for purposes unknown then return them to their original location. Oftentimes if you believe in fourth kind encounters, this where missing time comes into play.

We're going to go out on a limb and theorize that the latest batch of photos Universal has offered us for The Fourth Kind might be a tad too revealing. The Milla Jovovich-starring thriller concerns alien abduction and pics, like the one you see below, seem to imply Jovovich's character might have an extraterrestrial encounter herself. Or, it could simply be a dream sequence...

Since the trailer for The Fourth Kind made its debut, the advertising campaign is taking an even creepier turn. Case in point, check out these two television spots, entitled "Encounter" and "Until Now," courtesy of Universal. In this thriller directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Milla Jovovich (of the Resident Evil series) plays a doctor in Nome, Alaska who documents her interviews with patients with sleep disorders only to uncover a history of extraterrestrial abductions (that's an encounter of "the fourth kind," to you). It's the footage she captures that delivers the goosebump-inducing goods. See for yourself below. Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where—mysteriously since the 1960s—a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.

The Fourth Kind, one more than a close encounter of the third kind, implies alien abduction, just to clear that up. It seems that both the poster and the teaser really want you to know what the title means. If you didn't catch the trailer, you should, it's an odd egg. The film is from first time writer/director Olatunde Osunsanmi, who uses archival footage mixed with dramatizations and re-enactments in this film. The movie stars Milla Jovovich, Will Patton, and Elias Koteas.

It seems odd to me that in the 10th anniversary year of The Blair Witch Project, both this film and the upcoming Paranormal Activity are breathing life back into the "found footage" horror genre. I guess it takes 10 years for over-exposure wounds to heal.

Synopsis
A provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where — mysteriously since the 1960s — a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered.

Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented.

Screamfest 2009 runs from Oct 16th-25th at Graumman's Chinese Theatre. The Fourth Kind opens in theatres on November 6th.

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for "The Fourth Kind". Debuted via Sci Fi Wire, the promo video helps to explain what the fourth kind means. It strengthens the notion that the movie is a "fact-based thriller" as leading actress Milla Jovovich stated the film is "a dramatization of events that occurred October 2000".

The fourth kind is one of the terms established in 1972 to describe the scale of measurement for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is referred as the first kind. The second kind is known when evidence is collected, and the third kind is for the time contact is made with extraterrestrials. The next level, the fourth kind, is when an abduction takes place. This last encounter has been the most difficult to document until psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler comes to Nome, Alaska.

Well, it was about time for a movie update that didn’t have to do with A Perfect Getaway! Bloody Disgusting reports Olatunde Osunsanmi’s fact-based Alaskan thriller The Fourth Kind, in which Milla Jovovich stars as psychologist Abigail “Abbey” Tyler, will be released in U.S. theaters November 6 2009! That’s such great news, don’t you think?

The website furthermore has the official synopsis for the film, courtesy of Universal Pictures. No major plot twists are revealed, so this should be safe to read even for spoiler-phobes. From Bloody Disgusting:

In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document…until now.

Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.
